Evolv Luchador and Luchador SC

Evolv has released a new line of technical, all-around climbing shoes. Two shoes really stuck out to me, the Luchadors! Offered in both laces and velcro straps (SC), these shoes are quickly changing my opinions of climbing shoes.

One of the most appealing features of these shoes is their less aggressive fit, compared to the Ultra-Performance models. I've been looking for that one shoe I can take to the gym or day trip to the crag. With a slightly cambered last, the arch in the foot finds a nice middle ground that allows me to put some awesome power through the toes on overhangs. But the arch doesn't dominate my posture, I still find the same comfort and precision when working the vertical and slab climbs. Another really cool feature is the new take on an asymmetrical toe box. To continue the theme of middle ground, this snug fit works well for people like me who do have an asymmetrical profile but not as defined as in some of the more asymmetric toe boxes found in some of Evolv's shoes. You can read more about cambered and asymmetrical fits here!

Hands down though, the best feature is the new built in tongue. When I first put the lace model on, I squealed with joy in my head. "This is what a climbing shoe is suppose to feel like!" I thought to myself. The new tongue is elastic and really reduces that extra fluff on top of a shoe. By removing the a bulky tongue, I don't feel shackled to my shoe anymore. For the fastest fit, simply hold the tongue's edges up and open on the sides with your thumbs and slide your foot all the way in to where your toes rest perfectly in that slightly asymmetric toe box. Now pull your thumbs out and pull the heel cup over your foot. The same amount of time to put on other shoes, just a different tongue. Here is a very simple, rough photo guide for the three step fit.

In summary, these slightly aggressive shoes have a great array of design characteristics that will perform in the gym and at the crag for so many psyched climbers!
